Tenue de Nîmes Indigo-dyed Chuck Taylor All Star

This Friday Tenue de Nîmes are launching a collection of special, hand-dyed, natural indigo, customized Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoes. The Chuck Taylor All Star serves as a perfect muse for Tenue de Nîmes. With deep roots in style and culture, both the Chuck Taylor All Star shoe and indigo denim have led somewhat parallel lives. The Chuck Taylor All Star shoe and a pair of jeans have long been a staple of youth culture and music and have served as a symbol of independence for decades. Fittingly, Tenue de Nîmes asked the legendary denim experts, the Manabe family from Okoyama in Japan, owners of the Momotaro brand and Rampuya dyeing factory, if they would be able to indigo-dye a limited amount of 50 pairs. More info here.

Naked & Famous x Tenue de Nîmes collaboration

Tenue de Nîmes have teamed up with the denim-heads at Naked & Famous for a limited run of 24 pairs of jeans in a 13oz green, rope-dyed army repro denim. The mid-green color proved a particular challenge since the dye is very unstable, but the hard work has paid off, giving us a beautiful and truly inspired army-color. More info here.

CS Bell x Tenue de Nîmes

Tenue de Nîmes have teamed up with Paolo Bellini, a Dutch vintage aficionado and founder of CS Bell. Bellini has created a very exclusive series of hand-made canoe packs for the Dutch denim store. The bags, produced in Amsterdam, are made of thick canvas and leather. The design of the large backpack is based on traditional canoe packs from North America.

The heavy, army-green canvas has been treated with a precise mixture of wax and parafine to resist bad weather and water in particular. The shoulder straps are made of bridle leather straps, each four millimeters thick, that have been riveted on the pack by hand. Each bag is stamped 'CS Bell' on the inside.  A 'canal green' and beige Tenue de Nîmes expedition patch is found between the shoulder straps referring to the traditional Amsterdam-green color, often used to paint the bridges over the canals in the city centre. The packs are water-repellent and the spacious compartment makes it a great pack for everyday use.

The maker of the CS Bell packs is Paolo Bellini himself, as he was traditionally educated in the craft of leather and fur manufacturing. Being a devoted camper and having extensive knowledge of army and outdoor clothing, he decided make his own packs that would withstand the challenges of both the North Pole and the urban jungle. Backpacks made for a lifetime instead of a single season.

The CS Bell X Tenue de Nimes Canoe Pack is exclusively sold at Red Wing Shoes Amsterdam at €299,90.

Print 2.0 - Journal de Nîmes interviewed by Hypebeast.

Hypebeast's Eugene Kan interviewed us a few months ago on the redefinition of the 'Print Craft'. Kan was wondering if print is a dying specialty, or simply a medium that changed dramatically. To get an idea of what sort of views and beliefs are routed in both the young and established print world Eugene Kan at Hypebeast interviewed Clark Magazine’s Romain Dauriac, Inventory’s Ryan Willms, Green Soccer Journal’s Adam Towle, HIDDEN CHAMPION’s Hidenori Matsuoka and yours truly: Tenue de Nîmes’ Menno van Meurs. Here is a brief highlight from the interview:

EK:Based on your relatively niche content, do you think that the Internet has to play a crucial part in the marketing and awareness of your magazine and what it represents?
MM:Well the beauty of the internet is that you are able to get in touch with like-minded folks from all over the world in a split second. Thanks to great network with online media players, like Hypebeast, we are able to spread our thoughts and beliefs very accurately. You simply reach extremely committed audiences that especially go to blogs and websites to get this kind of specific content. This is how niche content gets a perspective. My marketing background makes me very interested in these kinds of changes in media. We came from a strict push paradigm and right now stuff has turned around dramatically. People come to you for content, not the other way around. So as long as you know where your audience hangs out they will learn about you eventually.

Tenue de Nîmes Website

Just before Christmas our friends from Tenue de Nîmes released their new website. The design by Anothercompany is refreshing and it adds a lot of functionality. The blog and online store are both an integrated part of the online denim domain. Every product features a detailed description by one of the founders of TdN. A great personal touch to the website I must say. Check it out here.

Have a nice Christmas!

Journal de Nimes Nº6 -The Dutch issue-

Yesterday we celebrated the launch of the Journal de Nimes Nº6 -The Dutch issue- together with the 2 year anniversary. I was honored to contribute to this issue of the journal. Here is a piece of what I wrote about our store:

"We try to provide people with products that fit their demand for good leather shoes, bags and accessories. The whole collection is built around a story of leather, canvas, durability and comfort. These elements combined with a good sense of style, a huge amount of enthusiasm and eagerness to learn more is our way of providing you with with something we found missing in our city."

Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay

Undoubtedly this is something that must have inspired Nigel Cabourn to make the collection he made for hisFall/Winter 2010 collection. Earlier we posted his Mountaineering Book, that shows many similarities to the pictures that I found at A Continuous Lean.

On May 29th in 1953 these guys where the first to conquer the mighty Mount Everest without all the fancy equipment used nowadays. I am in awe. The Nigel Cabourn winter collection is for sale at Tenue de Nîmes in Amsterdam.

My new shirt

Since getting familiar with the summer collection I consider myself a serious Libertine-Libertine fan. I purchased multiple shirts last season because of the good quality. They selected/produced their fabrics well and use thick but soft quality material. I roll up the sleeves twice, put my boots on and I am ready for action.

No coincidence that LL and Tenue de Nîmes have joined hands. They co-created a shirt based on the "Hobo" design. I like the hidden treasures like the collar, cuffs and small TdN logo on the right hand side of the shirt. Exclusively sold at Tenue de Nîmes. Ok, I am skipping the lamp for sure this month. Check their blog for more info.

Journal de Nîmes Nº5

The new Journal de Nîmes Nº5 -The British issue- is officially launched today. Tenue de Nîmes came across so many great things from the United Kingdom recently that we could have easily filled 100 pages. In this fifth release we proudly present an interview with Nigel Cabourn at his Newcastle residence, we discuss the Grenson factory visit and also feature a very personal denim interview with Miles Johnson, head designer of the inspiring Levi's XX department. Add to that a London shopping map, plenty of British Treasures, a brief history of the Duffle Coat as well as a tip of the cap to the 180th anniversary of the legendary (American) brand Woolrich and you will understand why this issue got a little out of hand. A digital version of the magazine is available after the click.
